From Szoros brook we continue along the red marked trail upward. From here, there is an increasingly sharper stretch of slope just to the crossing below the Ágas Castle. We continue our red red marked trail along the so-called Turkish footpaths to the tourist cottage below Ágas Castle. It is a place recommended for relax and draw new strengths. From there we will return by the red marked trail to the crossroads. From here we continue along the red „+” mark and gradually descend. A good place to relax is the Büdös-forrás spring, from where we are not far from first houses, but we still have a fairly long journey back to the railway station.

Built cultural heritage

·        St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church (Szent István Római Katolikus Templom)

On the hill beside the castle, clearly visible from the main road No. 21, there is a baroque building standing on gothic bases, which was frequently reconstructed. The church dedicated to martyr St. Stephen has plain ceiling and vaulted sanctuary, which was reconstructed around 1717, and later between 1838-44. The medieval church had a ridge turret and a sacristy of unknown size belonged to the north side of the sanctuary. In the 19th century, the roof was covered with slates and a gallery stood on the end of the nave. The church’s ceiling is painted, with coffered decoration. The present interior painting was made in 1956, the renovation of exterior was realised in the end of 1960s and 1990s. Only the carved stone pulpit lying on decorated stony pilaster remained from the early baroque church arrangement.

Address: Bátonyterenye - Kisterenye, Szent István Street 8.

  • Evangelical Church (Evangélikus templom)

The population of Szúpatak has decreased below 100 inhabitants. The church standing in the middle of the settlement was built in 1903, around it there are some typical palóc village houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th century, whith truly preserve the palóc architectural traditions. Besides natural and folk architectural givens the pure distance of famous pilgrimage place Szentkút increases well the importance of the place.

·        Romanesque Roman Catholic Church in Maconka (Maconkai Románkori Római Katolikus Templom)

The late romanesque roman catholic church in Maconka from the 1200s is built along the way crossing Nagybátony and heads to Kisterenye. As it is usual in case of medieval churches, its sanctuary looks to the east. A little wooden tower rises above his western facade and from this side opens the stoned entrance gate too. On the southern wall there are 3 romanesque funnel windows and the restored remain of the original entrance. On the southern side of the sanctuary we can find a little baroque window and on the eastern side a romanesque funnel window. To the northern side of the nave a square grounded sacristy connects. The nave is closed by beamed ceiling covered with cassettes. The church’s medieval details were discovered during research of walls and monument renovation in the years of 1970-71. Medieval frescos appeared on the wall of sanctuary and on the triumphal arch. These findings treasure up the Marialis Cultus in period belief. The church is one of the town’s most valuable monuments.

Roman Catholic Parish Church (Római Katolikus Plébánia Templom )

In 1882, a big fire occurred in Nagybátony, during which the village, the church and the parish was burnt. The reconstruction of church was started in 1735. According to the legend, the building material used was from the church in settlement Felsőlengyend. The church was built in as the hillside above the former main street of village was built in baroque style. The one nave building has a three-winged sanctuary, unusual for village churches in baroque times, tall footing, and highly exserted ledge. In the church interior the semicircle triumphal arch separates the sanctuary raised two steps of stairs above the nave. The baroque vaults were built during the renovation in the second half of the 18th century. A gallery was built in the northern wing in 1930 and 10 years later the organ gallery was also extended.
